서울 강남 정체성의 관계적 재구성 과정 연구: 지역 구성원들의 내부적 범주화를 중심으로

서울 강남은 한국의 근대화 과정 속에서 강남과 강북(혹은 비강남)으로 대별되는 이항대립적 구분을 통하여 한국의 다양한 정치, 사회, 경제, 문화적 현상들과 문제들을 비추고 있는 일종의 상징적 텍스트로서 간주되어 왔다. 그러나 강남의 사회적 경계화를 다룬 기존의 담론들은 매스미디어라는 권력을 통하여 외부적으로 범주화되어, 정작 내부의 거주자가 자신들의 정체성을 어떻게 구성해 나가는지에 대해서는 다루지 못하는 한계가 있었다. 이 연구는 총 14명의 강남 거주자 및 활동자들과의 심층면담을 통해 자신의 구술사와 생애사를 진술케 하여, 그것을 그대로 드러나게 하고 부분적으로 해석을 시도하였다. 그들에 의해 담론적으로 구성되는 정체성을 통해 자신들의 신체를 통한 직접 체험과 상징적 표현, 그리고 일상생활 및 소비문화와 관련된 장소적 맥락이 어떻게 표현되는지도 관심있게 살펴보았다. 서울 강남의 문제를 정체성의 정치 및 사회적 구성의 관점에서 살펴보는 것은 기존의 계급의 문제에 기반하여 이루어졌던 논의들에 비해 여러 가지 묻혀져 있던 일상생활의 미세한 문화적 문제들을 드러나게 해줄 수 있다는 점에서 의의가 있다. 또한 문화와 장소에 관련된 주체성이 어떻게 상호 인식되고 경합을 벌이고 협상되어지는지를 천착해 볼 수 있었다.
Abstract
Gangnam, Seoul has been regarded as a kind of socio-spatial text keeping various phenomena andproblems of Korean society and economy since last 30 years. The existing discourses dealing with socio-spatialdelimitation of Gangnam, however, have been externally categorized by the power of mass-media, and thus paid littleattention to how the residents or the workers of Gangnam manage to construct and reconstruct their own identitythemselves. This research has 14 informants to make statements of their oral history or life history at the semi-structured interview, some of which I interpret based on the principle of intertextuality. I also paid attention to howthey expressed their embodiment and symbols and place context surrounding consumption culture through theirdiscursively constructed identity. In contrast to the perspective based on economic class, the perspective of politics andsocial construction of identity helps the hidden minute cultural characteristics to be exposed on the surface. Also ithelps us to understand how subjectivities are perceived, conflicted, and negotiated each other in terms of theconstruction of identity relating with place and culture.
