Abstract
The first-phase new towns were developed on the outskirts of Seoul in the 1990s, as part of a national strategy to decentralize the population of the Seoul metropolitan area. Individuals who grew up in these newly planned settlements are now in their thirties and forties. While previous studies on new towns have primarily focused on their physical form and spatial transformaion, this study takes a different approach. We aim to identify the distinctive attributes of new towns by analyzing of how they are understood by individuals-referred to here as “New town Kids“-who were born and raised within these newly planned settlements. We find that the new town kids utilize the physical and social infrastructure of their hometowns as reference points in defining their relationship with the broader urban environment. The values, beliefs, and identities of their parents play a significant role in shaping their urban perceptions and decision-making. We argue that the emergence of the new town kid generation has played a pivotal role not only in shaping their own urban perspectives but also in transmitting reinterpreted urban values to their parents, ultimately contributing to the formation of a distinctive sense of “New townism.”
