토론은 민주시민으로서 갖추어야 할 역량을 함양하는 교육적 수단으로 검증된 바 있다. 본 논문은 서울대학교(SNU)의 사례를 통해 토론이 인성교육에서 수행하는 역할을 살펴본다. 서울대학교는 매년 ‘SNU 토론한마당’을 개최하여 학생들에게 ‘선한 인재’가 되는 데 필수적인 덕목들을 성찰할 기회를 제공한다. 본 연구는 특히 토론과 인성교육 간의 관계에 주목하며, 토론과 경청이 긴밀히 연결되어 있음을 강조한다. 또한 SNU 토론한마당에서 토론 주제 선정 과정 및 실제 토론 진행 과정을 살펴보고, 학생들의 평가 의견을 분석함으로써 토론이 학생들의 인성 형성에 미치는 영향을 밝힌다.
Abstract
Debate has been validated as an educational tool for cultivating the competencies necessary for democratic citizenship. This paper explores the role of debate in character education through a case study of Seoul National University (SNU). Every year, SNU organizes the “SNU Debate Festival,” providing students with opportunities to reflect on the virtues essential for becoming “benevolent individuals.” The study specifically focuses on the relationship between debate and character education, emphasizing the integral connection between debate and active listening. By examining the processes involved in selecting debate topics and conducting actual debates at the SNU Debate Festival, the research further analyzes students' feedback to clarify how debate influences their character development.
