본 연구는 4차 산업혁명 시대를 맞이하고 있는 시민교육의 과제와 그에 따른 지향점을 탐색하고자 하였다. 이를 위해 먼저 지금까지 시민성과 시민교육연구의 이론적 토대를 검토해 보는 작업이 수행되었다. 자유주의적 전통에서 시민성은 개인의 사적 영역과 자율성, 그리고 권리로서의 시민권이 강조되었다. 이러한 자유주의적 시민성은 타인에 대한 존중과 관용을 필연적으로 요청하지만, 공동체에 대해 ‘부담이 없는 자아’를 가정한다는 문제를 지닌다. 이에 대해 공동체주의는 개인을 공동체에 ‘부담을 지닌 자아’로 이해하고, 공동체주의적 시민은 공동선에 대한 지향, 공적 사안에 대한 관심과 참여와 같은 시민적 덕성을 갖춘 존재로 재정립된다. 비판이론에서는 우리의 신념이 사실은 지배적인 이데올로기에 의해 형성된 것임을 깨닫고 이로부터 해방되고자 하는 비판적 시민성이 중요하게 제시된다. 포스트모더니즘은 인간의 이성에 대한 근본적인 회의를 통해 시민의 정체성과 주체성에 대해 유동적이고 다형적인 시민성을 대안으로 제시한다. 그러나 4차 산업혁명의 흐름은 한국의 자본주의와 민주주의, 그리고 시민교육에 커다란 변화를 가져왔다. 자본주의는 생산성의 향상과 더불어 실업과 양극화 같은 새로운 갈등상황을 배태하였고, 민주주의는 의사소통도구의 혁신을 맞이하였지만 굴절된 소통과 집단 이성의 감성적 동화와 같은 문제점을 노정하였다. 문제는 이러한 상황에서 중요한 역할을 담당해야 할 시민의 주체성이 죽음을 맞이한 것처럼 보인다는 점, 시민교육을 담당해야 할 학교교육 역시 새로운 도전에 직면하고 있다는 점이다. 이에 대해 본 연구는 4차 산업혁명 시대 시민교육의 방향을 다음과 같이 모색한다. 즉 시민성 개념을 ‘주체적 시민성’으로서 재개념화하고, 시민교육 교수학습방법을 ‘지식의 공동구성 수업’을 통해 혁신하며, 증거기반 연구를 넘어서는 ‘타자지향적인 연구’와 실천성 제고를 위한 ‘학제 간 연구’를 제시하며, 마지막으로 시민교육 ‘언어의 의미에 대한 재검토’를 시도하는 것이다.
Abstract
This study tried to suggest the new perspectives of citizenship education in the era of the fourth industrial revolution. For this purpose, prior theoretical foundations of the citizenship and citizenship education were examined. In a liberal tradition, citizenship as autonomy and rights were emphasized. This liberal citizenship requires respects and generosity for the others, but presupposes the ‘unencumbered self.’ On the contrary, communitarianism understands individuals as ‘situated self,’ and the citizens are reestablished to have civic virtues. In critical theory, citizens are encouraged to have critical citizenship to realize the fact that our beliefs are made by the dominant ideologies, and therefore to be emancipated from it. Postmodernism doubts the reason of human beings, which leads to the understandings of fluid and multi-faceted identities and subjectivities. But the flow of the fourth industrial revolution brought about a huge change for the Korean capitalism, democracy, and citizenship. Capitalism boosted by the increased productivity gave birth to the mass unemployment and polarization. Democracy provided with the revolutionary communication tools brought about the distorted communications and unreasonable decision makings. But the real problem was that the civic subjectivity seems to be demised, and that the citizenship education is faced with its own challenges to overcome. For this, the study suggested the following as orientations of citizenship education in the era of the fourth industrial revolution: reconceptualizing the citizenship as agentic citizenship, innovating the citizenship education methods with the co-construction of social knowledge, suggesting others-oriented as well as interdisciplinary research, and re-examining the meanings and significance of language.
