Abstract

Can direct or extended contact with out-group improve students' attitude on out-group? This article attempts to answer the question by providing survey results of middle school students in Danwon District of Ansan and Seo District of Incheon in Korea. The results are as follows. First, direct contact group, compared to extended contact or non-contact groups, showed higher degree of preference on out-group. Second, both direct and extended contact decreased anxiety level and therefore increased preference level. Third, whereas there was intermediary effect of self-disclosure in the case of direct contact, no intermediary effect of self-disclosure was found in the case of extended contact.
