Abstract

This study explores the application of critical race theory in the field of social studies education. Critical race theory(CRT) in education is a form of scholarship involving topics regarding race and racism in the center of the field of education. Scholars in critical race theory intend to help people of color construct counternarratives challenging the master narrative regarded as truth in broader society. CRT in education was developed in the field of Critical Legal Study(CLS) in the United States and was applied to studies on diverse topics regarding education. Currently, CRT is used in social studies teacher education research and social studies curriculum research. In the scholarship of social studies education, it has been criticized racism tends to be regarded as individuals' lack of tolerance of diversity rather than social problems caused by unequal stratifications among racial groups. Thus, in this study, it is suggested that students can explore and understand race and racism by constructing counternarratives while studying the origins of racism, which are introduced in social studies curricula and textbooks. Also, this study provides examples of the application of critical race theory to social studies education, such as the application of critical race theory for the studies of social studies teacher professionalism, teaching practices, development of curricula and lesson plans, and cultural wealth of students of color and their communities.
