사회과 다문화교육의 현황과 과제

초록

본 연구는 다문화교육과 사회과 교육의 관계에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 사회과 다문화교육의 실제를 교육과정, 교수-학습, 교사교육의 측면에서 살펴본다. 우선 교육과정 측면에 있어서 2009 개정 사회과 교육과정은 문화적 다양성, 다양한 문화, 다문화 지역, 다문화 사회로의 진입 등을 내용 요소로 포함하고 있어 이전의 교육과정에 비해 다문화교육에 대한 관심이 강화되었음을 알 수 있다. 사회과의 다문화 교수-학습 전략 개발은 아직 탐색 단계에 있으며, 앞으로 다양한 교수법 개발 및 그효과에 대한 실증 연구가 요청된다. 사회과의 다문화 교사교육 프로그램은 문화적 다양성에 대한 교사의 태도 개선이나 문화적 효능감 향상에 효과가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 프로그램의 양과 다양성 개선이 여전히 과제로 지적된다. 현재 다문화 교사교육 프로그램은 다문화교육의 목표 및 이론에 대한 개념적 이해에 치중되어 있어, 현장 경험이나 교과 전문성과의 통합 경험을 충분히 제공해주지 못하고 있다.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to address the current status and future directions of multicultural education in Korean social studies, in terms of curriculum, teaching methods, and teacher education programs. First, compared to the 7th national social studies curriculum, the 2009 revised national curriculum incorporated more content areas regarding cultural diversity, diverse regions, and multicultural phenomena, and textbooks need to be written accordingly. Second, developing teaching and learning methods for multicultural classrooms is in the very beginning stage. Diverse teaching methods and instructional strategies should be developed. Third, there are few multicultural teacher education programs for the secondary education, while elementary teacher training programs have recently built diverse programs. More preservice and inservice programs are needed for preparing teachers for the 21st century Korean social studies education.
