Abstract

obesity and physical inactivity are two health issues affecting young people. Reference data for physical activity level and activity-related energy expenditure are needed for a better understanding of the effect of activity on childhood health, growth, and development. Self-report recall questionnaires used to measure physical activity and energy expenditure. The introduction of Ainsworth’s physical activity compendium for energy expenditure has led to the practical use of the self-report questionnaire for physical activity in field. However, this compendium that is composed of 605 items of METs for physical activities requires recoding physical activities by units such as sitting, singing, and walking. Because of its sophisticated units of physical activity, It fails to report participant’s recognition. For solving the problem of the sophisticated unit recognition, this study developed SPA which estimate physical activity by locations and working patterns. Therefore, the purpose of this paper was to develop computerized energy expenditure automatic scoring program (Activity Diary using Set of Physical Activity: ADSPA) for assessing physical activity records. The ADSPA program may reduce the labor-intensive scoring for data analyses and shorten the amount of researcher’s time and effort. Also ADSPA program will be successfully used as a major research tool for physical activity research to large population in an effective manner.
