Abstract
Lack of physical activity has been a major public health concern. Accurately measuring the level of physical activity is thus essential in understanding physical activity participation and in designing effective physical activity interventions. Several methods have been developed to measure physical activity. Self-reported questionnaire is among the most popular one because it can be administered relatively quick and it is easy to obtain and inexpensive. The self-reported questionnaire items are often based on the activity intensity category to collect individuals’ physical activity participation, assuming that they could correctly classify the physical activities into corresponding categories (low, moderate, and vigorous). This assumption, however, was never tested. The purpose of this study is to examine the accuracy of individuals’ perception of physical activity intensity (validity) and the consistency of their classifications (reliability). The questionnaire was administered to 344 participants. Criterion-referenced validity (Contingency coefficient, C) and reliability (Proportion agreement, P) were examined. Classification accuracy was generally not good for all intensity levels (low=.55, moderate=.51, V=.50). The consistency of participants' classification result was, however, acceptable (P=.75). Overall, the participants were not able to correctly classify physical activity by intensity. Further investigation focusing on developing a self-reported questionnaire by improving intensity classification accuracy needs to be warranted.
