Abstract

Reference data for physical activity level and activity-related energy expenditure are needed for a better understanding of the effect of activity on childhood health, growth, and development. The purpose of the present study was to assess energy expenditure based on site-specific physical activities by gender, day, time of day, and days of week with a self-reported questionnaire in middle school children and validate this questionnaire. observation studies were conducted by self-cassette-recoding during one week from 59 middle school children (29 males and 30 females) and data were divided into site-specific activities. according to the results, energy expenditure of middle school children at school was highest among all sites, and at other place (shopping center, restaurant) lowest. After school children spent the most time of day to study. This physical activity, however, lead in lower energy expenditure per time. Meanwhile, spending the time to health care was higher energy expenditure per time. In school, playing on the class of physical education was the highest source of energy expenditure per time, even though the duration of playing on the ground was lower. The new compendium of physical activity based on sites was compatible with the classic compendium of physical activity, leading into higher correlation coefficient. This fact suggested assessment of the site-specific physical activity for energy expenditure is usable.
