Abstract

This study aimed to categorize social studies teachers' subjective perceptions of emotions and the corresponding social studies class practice patterns, and to understand the characteristics of each type. To achieve this, the Q methodology, a subjectivity verification method, was used. Specifically, a total of 30 Q statements were selected by conducting in-depth interviews with social studies teachers and analyzing the literature on emotions in social studies education. Then, 35 social studies teachers were selected as P samples for Q classification, and factor analysis was performed using the PQ method program with the collected data. As a result of the analysis, five types were classified based on the perception of emotions and teaching practice methods. <Type I> is the 'emotion exclusion type', which recognizes emotions as a factor that causes cognitive biases and interferes with decision-making and tries to prevent students' and teachers' emotions from being involved in social studies classes as much as possible. <Type II> is the ‘emotion avoidance type,’ which recognizes emotions as personal and highly subjective, and tries to prevent emotional outbursts in the classroom by avoiding politically sensitive topics or other subjects that may trigger emotional reactions in students. <Type III> is an "emotion control type," meaning that despite recognizing the importance of emotions in social studies classes and their significance for a teacher's professionalism, the teacher may struggle to handle students' emotions and, therefore, tends to suppress emotions in both teachers and students during social studies instruction. <Type IV> is the ‘emotion utilization type,’ which acknowledges the importance of emotions in social studies classes and actively utilizes them in social studies classes. <Type V> is the 'emotion expression type,' which recognizes that students' emotions are inevitably involved in social studies discussions and allows for their expression. Furthermore, teachers are encouraged to be attentive to their own emotions and proactive in displaying their emotions in front of students. Based on these findings, implications for social studies education research and teacher professional development are presented.
