민주시민교육의 교수학습 전략으로서 논쟁적 주제 토론 연구: 의견 표명 딜레마를 중심으로

논쟁적 주제 토론은 민주시민교육을 위한 주요한 교수학습 전략으로 오랜 학문적 전통을 갖고 있다. 하지만 논쟁적 주제 토론이 가치 상대주의를 조장한다는 비판과 함께 특정한 가치의 주입, 교화로 이어질 수 있다는 비판이 제기되어 왔다. 이러한 비판에 대하여 헤스 외 연구진은 논쟁적 주제 토론의 교육적 효과가 교사가 의견을 표명하거나 표명하지 않는 단순한 구분에 달려 있지 않고 ‘연속적인 관점’에서 의견을 표명하는(또는 표명하지 않는) ‘방식’에 있음을 증거한다. 이러한 결론은 논쟁적 주제 토론에서 교사가 유념해야 할 중요한 교육원리를 시사한다. 논쟁적 주제 토론과 교사의 의견 표명(불표명)의 교육적 가치는 교사가 논쟁의 참여자들을 존중하고, 논쟁에서 다양한 가치를 확보하려는 즉, 민주적 가치의 구현 방식에 있다.
Abstract
Controversial issue discussions have a long academic tradition as a major teaching and learning strategy for democratic citizenship education. However there has been contradictory criticism that controversial issue discussions can promote value relativism and lead to the coercion of certain values. In response to this criticism, Hess et al. point out that the educational effect of controversial issue discussions does not depend on simple division in which the teacher shares own view or does not. This conclusion suggests important teaching principles for teachers using controversial issues. The educational value of teacher's disclosure (or non-disclosure) lies in the way he or she embodies democratic values: respecting participants and securing the value of diversity in the debate.
