Abstract

This article examines how the crisis of contemporary Korean education—often described as a regime of unlimited competition—is rooted not only in social and institutional factors but also in a modern internalization of the dichotomy between scientific knowledge and ethical knowledge, through an analysis of Park Eun-sik’s educational discourse. Before the Eulsa Treaty(1905), Park’s educational thought exemplified a modern transformation of a Confucian educational outlook, combining the Neo-Confucian ideal of “inner sageliness and outer kingliness” with Western “new learning.” After the Treaty, however, under the influence of social Darwinism, he came to view the world as a struggle for survival governed by the law of the survival of the fittest and began to present scientific knowledge as a necessary condition for the nation’s very existence. By sharply separating scientific from ethical knowledge and emphasizing the acquisition of the former, he sought to provide an ideological foundation for an educational movement aimed at strengthening the nation’s capabilities and achieving independence. At the same time, confronted with the imperialist practices of the Western powers, Park clearly perceived the limits of scientific–technological knowledge. Turning to Yangming learning, he attempted to move beyond a one-sided, science-oriented education and to promote the parallel cultivation of scientific and ethical knowledge. His project is significant as a transitional effort to subject scientific–technological civilization to moral reflection, yet it remains confined to a dualistic juxtaposition of the two forms of knowledge. As Park’s educational theory shows, the separation of scientific and ethical knowledge was not an ultimate goal for Korean education but a transitional configuration. This study thereby demonstrates that the dichotomy between scientific and ethical knowledge functioned both as a theoretical basis for modern discourses of education for national self-strengthening and as a deep structure legitimizing the institutional separation of knowledge education and character education in contemporary Korean schooling. It concludes by suggesting that overcoming the current impasse of Korean education requires moving beyond this dichotomy toward a new educational paradigm that seeks the mutual mediation and substantive integration of scientific and ethical knowledge across the entire system of curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
