Abstract
Under the British colonial rule which began in 1786, Penang became a multi-cultural society including Malays, Indians, Eurasians and Chinese migrants. In the new colony, there was an increase in population but there was gender imbalance in Penang’s Chinese Community. Within the Chinese Community, there was a group of single male labourers who were not able to find their marriage partners. Those male Chinese migrants could not invite Chinese bride as the Chinese government did not allow emigration of female Chinese so they bought Sumatran female slaves from the 1820s as an alternative. However, the British colonial officials assumed slave trade as illegality and prohibited trading activities. The slave trade created marriage market in Penang to ease the gender imbalance which was an impediment to abolish the slavery. In order to eradicate illegal slave trade, the colonial officials considered several attempts, but nothing was happened. This research traces why there was a demand for female slaves in Penang’s Chinese Community in early 19th century, and how the gender imbalance resulted marriage of male Chinese labourers and population growth in Penang.
