포식의 문제는 동물을 윤리적으로 대우하자는 주장에 대한 비판으로서 제시된다. 동물을 윤리적으로 대우해서 육식과 동물 실험 등을 금지한다면, 포식 동물이 피식 동물을 잡아먹지 못하게 해서 자연의 고통을 줄이는 것이 일관적이지 않느냐는 것이 그 비판의 내용이다. 그러나 포식을 막기 위해서 자연에 개입하는 것은 터무니없다고 생각하므로, 동물을 윤리적으로 대우하자는 주장도 잘못되었다는 것이 포식에 의한 비판의 주장이다. 동물 해방론과 동물 권리론은 자신들의 이론에서 자연에 개입해야 한다는 결론은 나오지 않는다고 답변하는 방식으로 이 비판을 피해 나간다. 이 논문은 동물 해방론과 동물 권리론을 일관되게 적용하면 자연에 개입해야 한다는 결론이 나온다는 것을 보여 줄 것이다. 그리고 자연에 개입하는 것은 포식에 의한 비판이 주장하듯이 터무니없는 결론이 아니라는 것을 주장할 것이다. 다만 터무니없다는 비판을 받지 않을 수준에서 우리에게 포식의 고통을 막을 의무가 있다는 것을 보일 것이다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to show that human beings should intervene in nature with the animal liberation theory and animal rights theory regardless of the predation problem. Those who agree to these theories grant animals moral status and try to treat them ethically. However, other camps who criticize these theories argue that animals cannot have moral status with the predation problem. Their point is that if granting animals moral status, we should protect preys from predators, which is absurd. Therefore the animal liberation theory and animal rights theory attempt to avoid such criticism by demonstrating that we should not intervene in nature when we adhere to these theories. Unlike this attempt, I would like to show that we should intervene in nature with these theories for the good of ethical consistency. Though it is very challenging to prohibit predation in nature, we have a duty of it, and should try it as far as we can.
