환경윤리의 관점과 육식문화의 반성 ―육식 선호의 습관을 포기하고, 채식 위주의 식사를 고려할 때인가?―

사실 환경문제와 관련하여 육식문화를 포기해야 한다면 정작 우리가 잃는 것은 소중한 생명도 아니요, 없어서는 안 될 건강도 아니다. 그저 ‘식탁 위의 어떤 즐거움’을 잠시 유보하는 것뿐이다. 이에 반해 동물들은 인간의 단순한 식도락을 위해 그들의 하나뿐인 생명을 내놓는다. 이것은 누가 봐도 불공평한 처사가 아닐 수 없다. 이제 우리는 여기서 한 가지 분명한 도덕적 합의사항을 확인하고 넘어갈 필요가 있다고 생각한다. 그것은 앞으로 동물들을 대하는 방식을 둘러싼 윤리학적 논의가 어떻게 진행되든지 간에 다른 동물들과 함께 하나의 자연집단에 불과한 인간 공동체는 더 이상 현재와 같은 모습 그대로 동물들을 다루어서는 안 된다는 점이다. 이론적인 설명의 편의를 위해 설정된 가정적 상황은 도덕원리나 정치제도를 명료하게 가다듬고 수정, 보완할 수 있는 일종의 도구적 장치임에 분명하다. 그러나 현실적으로 존재하는 헤아릴 수 없을 정도로 많은 동물들의 고통 및 이와 관련된 우리들의 윤리적 선택은 결코 가설적인 것이 아니다. 다시 말해 인간과 동물 사이를 어떤 기준으로 구별하든지 간에 인간들이 다른 동물들을 도덕적으로 고려할만한 가치가 있는 존재로 다루지 않는 곳에서는 이제 이를 옹호할만한 지적 근거를 발견할 수 없다고 보는 것이다. 이 논문은 이처럼 오늘날 인류가 처한 시대상황은 우리 모두에게 지금까지 견지해 온 ‘자연과 동물’에 대한 입장을 근본적으로 바꿀 것을 요구하고 있다는 사실을 다시 한 번 더 강조하는 내용을 담고 있다.
Abstract
While for men meat eating might be a kind of luxurious custom, this is in fact the innate essential rights itself to animals which relates to their only life. Thus, the defenders of animal rights argue that, if not eating meat does not threaten to our healthy life, we should not so as well as we do not need to eat animal's meat consistently. Here they suggest that to change the practice of meat eating popular in most countries into a certain food culture of vegetable eating which is environment-friendly could be an actual approach to solve the difficult environmental problems. However here and now for all of us to be vegetarians at the same time is not so easy thing as they speak. The reason is that all people shall not agree to this question delightfully. As such people have diverse tastes in their likes and dislikes of meat eating. Though I think that now we should change our mind concerning the problem of meat eating and its relevance to environmental pollution. If doing so, we at least would be a conscientious meat consumer or rational omnivore in Peter Singer’s conceptual meanings. In this respect, I feel that it is the time for us Buddhists who comply with the precept of not-taking all sentient’s lives as the first thing to take part in the movement of preventing killing animals and its eating everyday’s practice more positively.
