Abstract
[Purpose]This study compares and analyzes the intensity of income smoothing before and after the introduction of IFRS (Hypothesis 1). In addition, using the research method of Hartlieb and Loy (2022), income smoothing is divided into informational properties and garbling properties, and then the specific informational properties of income smoothing changed due to the introduction of IFRS are examined (Hypothesis 2). [Methodology]The sample period of this study is from 2003 to 2020 for listed companies. And in consideration of the measurement method of income smoothing, the final samples of hypotheses 1 and 2 were 5,918 company-years and 3,450 company-years, respectively, and analyzed. [Findings]First, with the introduction of IFRS, income smoothing, a proxy for managerial discretion, decreased significantly. And when income smoothing is divided into informational properties and garbling properties, it is analyzed that the main cause of reduced income smoothing due to the introduction of IFRS is due to the garbling properties. Second, it was analyzed that the relative information power attribute of income smoothing (informational properties to garbling properties) increased with the introduction of IFRS. And through additional analysis, the information power (or predictive power) of the current accounting profit for income smoothing dms future cash flows was increased, and it was analyzed that it increased even more after the introduction of IFRS. [Implications]This study will have implications for related research fields in that both the quantitative level and qualitative attributes of managers’ discretion through accruals are considered in accordance with the introduction of IFRS.
