Abstract
There have been extensive studies about information sharing in a manufacturing supply chain due to its importance. However, for service operations, there have been relatively few studies about information sharing. We investigate how demand information can be used for capacity allocation in a serial service operation by studying assignment of airline customer service agents to two-stage tasks. We try to search for an allocation rule to minimize the total cost including customers' waiting cost and labor cost. As a result of a computational study, the policy to reduce uncertainty by allocating the same number of servers in the latter stage as that of customers who have been served in the previous stage incurs the lowest total cost among several possible allocation policies. The effect of uncertainty reduction increases with demand variability or with the ratio of unit waiting cost over unit labor cost.
