Abstract

Information sharing is suggested as one of the methods coping with the Bullwhip effect, the phenomenon of demand variability amplification as going up in the supply chain. We propose a model for understanding and quantifying the value of information sharing and examine the impact of the related variables such as lead time, demand variability, etc. on the value of information sharing. Our model is different from others in that we consider the case where a producer and a retailer shares the shortage cost and the results are the following: the value of information sharing depends on the shortage cost sharing proportion. As the retailer's share increases, the value of information sharing for the producer decreases. In addition, compared to the case of sharing the shortage cost excessively by one side, when the producer and the retailer share it equally, the total average inventory level for the entire supply chain is larger, thus, resulting in a higher customer service level. And the retailer's average inventory level with shortage cost sharing is lower than that without sharing. Also, it turns out that the value of information sharing increases as demand variability and lead time increases.
