Abstract
A purpose of this research is to analyze urban competitiveness of Busan City compared with other Korean and global metropolitan cities and to provide with policy suggestions for future development.. Our research outcome indicates that Busan has been ranked at the low level of competitiveness. While its levels of living environment and quality of life have improved much during the last decade, economic index shows very gloomy status. It has been noticed that Busan is undergoing a severe process of economic restructuring, which transforms from traditional economy to new economy. There is yet a new propulsive industry which can replace old and deteriorating ones. At the same time, growing numbers of young labor forces escape the region to find better jobs and exacerbate a problem of aging population. In order to cut this vicious cycle of urban deterioration, both city and national governments need to intervene in helping raise urban competitiveness of Busan and accelerate its collaboration with neighboring local governments.
