Abstract

Based on the perception that science and technology plays a key role in regional economic growth, this paper studies changes in Busan industrial structures utilizing OECD(2005) industry classification by technology. Major findings are as follows: First, the share of high-tech industries is lower and the shares of medium and low-tech industries are higher in Busan than national average. Second, indices that measure diversity of industrial structures reveal that Busan industrial structure lags behind national average in terms of science and technology. Third, the performances of the 10 strategic industries in Busan is disappointing partly due to poor result of the 6 region-specific strategic industries. Based on the research results, it can be concluded that Busan needs to reconstruct industrial structure towards enhancing the level of science and technology in industrial structure. From this viewpoint, it can be suggested that Busan's 10 strategic industries need to be re-adjusted since some low-technology industries are included in the strategic industries.
