Abstract

Urban Air Mobility (UAM) is regarded as a promising solution to critical challenges arising from urban population concentration, including air pollution and increasing economic costs. UAM is not only a means of transporting passengers and cargo but also offers high versatility for various purposes, including emergency medical services, disaster relief, logistics, and tourism. Consequently, extensive research on UAM-related laws, infrastructure development, demand forecasting, and technological advancements is being conducted at the national level. However, as UAM has not yet been commercialized globally, various potential concerns have been raised ahead of its introduction. In particular, similar to other new transportation systems such as Autonomous Vehicles (AV) and Electric Vehicles (EV), social acceptance may pose a greater barrier than technological readiness in the adoption process. Social acceptance should also be carefully considered in the commercialization process of UAM. The purpose of this study is to examine solutions to address potential concerns expected during the initial commercialization stage of UAM and evaluate their importance, ultimately supporting policy development for the effective establishment of UAM as a new transportation system. To achieve this, this study reviews previous research on potential concerns and corresponding solutions to UAM adoption. Additionally, it assesses the effectiveness of these solutions based on a public perception survey and expert analysis. Specifically, a social acceptance survey was conducted with 1,108 residents of the metropolitan area (Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon). The survey analyzed the significance of solutions to address concerns in four perspectives: safety, residential environment, natural environment and ecosystems, and security. Additionally, a group of 20 experts used AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) and ANP (Analytic Network Process) to evaluate the importance of solutions, including business feasibility, within these domains. This study holds academic significance by combining insights from the general public and expert groups, highlighting critical solutions to address potential concerns in the early stages of UAM commercialization. Based on the research findings, enhancing the social acceptance of UAM requires addressing public concerns in alignment with evolving perceptions among the general population. This necessitates prioritizing solutions based on their importance and urgency through discussions within expert groups. Furthermore, beyond information sharing among experts, it is crucial to transparently communicate UAM-related information to the public and conduct ongoing research to understand shifts in public perception regarding these solutions.
