본 연구는 학생과 학부모들이 진학할 고등학교 유형을 결정하는 데 영향을 미치는 변인을 분석하고자 대구교육실태연구2016 중학교 자료를 활용하여 1,873명을 대상으로 전·후기고의 다양한 고교유형을 반영하여 고등학교를 진학하고자 할 때 학생의 가정배경, 개인특성과 학교특성, 고교 선택 시 고려하는 요소와 진로영향력 등의 요인들이 어떻게 작용하는지 다항로지스틱 다층모형을 적용하여 검토하였다. 첫째, 학생들의 성취수준은 고등학교를 선택하는 데에 있어 가장 강력한 요인으로 확인되었다. 그에 반해 부모 학력, 가구소득 등과 같은 가정의 사회경제적 지위는 학생의 개인특성 변인을 통제하면 고등학교 유형 결정에 독립적인 영향은 없는 것으로 나타났다. 한편 부모의 기대수준이 고등학교 유형 결정에 유의한 영향을 주었다. 둘째, 지리적 접근성과 유리한 내신 성적은 다른 학교유형에 비해 일반고를 선택할 때 고려하는 요인으로 나타났다. 특목․자사고와 특성화․마이스터고는 상대적으로 진로와 취업을 더욱 고려하는 것으로 확인되어 고등학교 진학 시 의사결정에 작용하는 요인에 차이가 있었다. 특목․자사고에 비해 통학거리 즉 지리적 접근성이 일반고의 경쟁력 있는 요인으로 나타남에 따라 보다 통학시간을 줄일 수 있는 배정방법을 고안할 필요성이 제기된다. 요컨대 고등학교 계층화로 인한 일반고 위기론이 대두되고 있는 시점에서 전․후기고의 다양한 고교유형을 반영하여 고등학교 유형 선택의 결정요인을 파악한 데에 본 연구의 의의가 있다. 또한 일반고의 활성화를 위해 경쟁력 있는 요소를 적용한 방안모색이 필요하며, 일반고 내 학교선택의 효과성에 대한 후속연구를 기대해본다.
Abstract
This study examines determinants that explain high school choice as an indication of educational aspiration among Korean middle school students and their parents. Using multinomial logistic multi-level model, we explored determinants of high school choice among middle school students based on data retrieved from the Analysis of Actual Status of Daegu Education 2016. The main research question is as follows: What are the most significant factors related to choice of high school type among middle school students and their parents in Daegu? Our research found that there is robust influence of academic achievement to choose high school. Family background such as parents’ education and family income, however, independently has less influence on high school choice than students’ variables such as academic motives, their own educational aspirations, and study time. Factors related with career and employment are important to choose self-governing private high schools and Meister high schools. Further, geographical proximity and the advantages of academic performance have no rival factors in choosing general high schools compared with self-governing private high schools and Meister high schools. Taken together, this study suggest that a variety of educational programs should be implemented in general high schools to overcome their difficulties. We also proposed further research on the effectiveness of high school choice specifically within general high schools.
