고등학교 진학에 대한 가정 배경, 학생 노력, 학교 경험의 영향력 분석

이 논문은 우리나라 중학생들의 고등학교 진학 과정에서 가정 배경, 학생 개인의 노력, 그리고 학교 경험이 어느 정도 영향을 미치는가를 분석하였다. 학생들의 성취 수준을 통제하고 진학 경로를 일반고, 전문고, 특목고 등으로 세분화할 때, 이들 변인들의 영향력이 어떻게 나타나는가에 초점을 두었다. 이를 위하여 2004년 174개 중학교 3학년 학생 9,133명의 진학 결과를 사용하였다. 분석 결과, 가정 배경 요인은 개인의 노력이나 성취 수준과 무관하게 학생들의 진학 과정에 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 다른 변인들의 수준이 동일하더라도 특목고나 일반고 진학은 상위 계층 학생에게 좀 더 유리하였다. 수업 태도와 같은 긍정적인 학교 경험은 일반고 진학에 영향을 미치지만, 특목고 진학에 대해서는 별다른 영향을 미치지 못하였다. 특목고 진학은 학교 수업이나 개인의 노력이외에도 가정에서의 추가적인 지원이 필요하다. 요컨대, 특목고나 자사고와 같은 “선별된 학교” 진학에 대해서 학생 노력이나 학교 경험의 효과가 나타나기는 하지만, 가정 배경의 영향력을 넘어서는 정도는 아니라고 할 수 있다. 이는 고등학교 진학 단계에서도 교육 계층화를 보완하는 정책이 필요하다는 점을 시사해주고 있다.

Abstract

This study investigated the extent to which the opportunity of high school education is depend on student's backgrounds, effort, and experience of schooling. Especially, this study focused on whether student's backgrounds have still influence on probability of his/her access to three type of high school education after his/her academic achievement level controlled. Given the concerns, this study analyzed the educational path of 9,133 graduates in 174 middle schools. The result confirms that student backgrounds are more positively associated with access to “selective high school” or general high school rather than vocational high school. Also it is supported that student's effort and school experience could be effective. However, the effects of effort and school variables have significantly shrunken when the student achievement is controlled. In short, we have implication that student background factors would be still influential in a differentiated high school system.
