This article suggests directions for the compilation of a dialect dictionarycentering on the choice of headwords and definitions. Based on a survey of 12dialect dictionaries, the study mainly discusses the differences among them. As forthe choice of headwords, it deals with technical terms, words borrowed from theJapanese language, and proverbs. First, while there is no need to exclude technicalterms from headwords, those technical terms that only a few experts know shouldbe excluded from the choice of headwords. Second, native words should be givenpriority over foreign words or Sino-Korean words, but the inclusion of foreignwords does not necessarily mean the exclusion of foreign words borrowed from theJapanese language. Third, proverbs should be included as subheadings. As fordefinitions, the article first deals with definitions of headwords whose meaningsare the same in the standard language and dialects, and then with methods fordefining words who have the same meanings but different forms in dialects. Lastly,it discusses references that can be used to supplement definitions.
