An emphasis on vocabulary instruction for Korean langauage learners is neededbecause a large vocabulary is a prerequisite for learners to become advancedlearners. The rule of word formation method is the most popular and wide usedway to improve vocabulary size in vocabulary instruction. Therefore, a selection ofderivational affixes is needed to support this form of language education. Thisresearch seeks to choose derivational affixes for the Korean learners using a list of50,000 vocabulary words. About 418 affixes, including 149 prefixes and 269suffixes, were selected in the process of counting derivational powers. Since 5,000of the 50,000 words are derivatives, the most prominent affixes will be selectedbased on the numbers of derivatives with the same affixes. About 100 suffixes arevery prominent in Korean words and an additional 40 prefixes need to be taught foran effective means of studying Korean words.
