Abstract
This study examines the functions, transformations, and stylistic features of paemun (牌文), a document sent from China to Joseon to provide advance notice of an envoy’s dispatch. The pae (牌), which originated from a tool for using horse relays in ancient China, was used as a document issued by a superior to a subordinate during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Among these were the baekpae (白牌) and the paemun; an examination of their contents and documentary formats has confirmed that the two can be considered the same document. Through the case of the Qing imperial envoy dispatched in 1799, this study explores the state of confusion within the Joseon court caused by the Qing’s irregular documentary system. King Jeongjo believed that the inconsistency in the documents sent with each arrival of a Qing envoy was due to the deficiencies in the Qing’s paemun documentary system. To address this, he compiled the Sadaegorye (事大考例), a collection of diplomatic materials. Finally, this study attempts to reconstruct the documentary format of the paemun based on the paemun-sik (牌文式) in the Tongmungwanji (通文館志) and records from the Ilseongnok (日省錄). The wooden tablet (mokpae, 木牌) was two-sided, with a tiger illustration on the front and the paemun text written on the back. The paemun text itself can be divided into three parts: the main body, a supplementary section, and a conclusion. It was characterized by distinctive features, such as varying the elevation of characters related to the emperor and writing certain characters, including the date of issuance, in red ink.
