조선시대 表箋연구(1) -保國과 華國의 역할을 중심으로

Abstract

This study set out to approach "pyojeons"(old diplomatic documents of a kind and writings offered to kings, queens, and crown princes), which were created during Joseon in its relationships with China, as "writings"of a period, examine their functions as writings. For those purposes, sorted out pyojeons during Joseon according to periods and investigated their writing practices and the functions of "Protecting and promoting one's country with writings" through the aspects of diplomatic conflicts over the expressions and styles of pyojeons, the responses of Joseon's royal court, creation process, and the literary figures' perceptions. Special focus was placed on the movements of Joseon's royal court, which tried to search for solutions in the aspect of expressive styles and rhetoric strategies in addition to building a writings management system by reinforcing writings education in recognition of the importance of writings directly connected to national interests, segmenting the creation process, and diversifying the review process. Those national-level efforts were reflected in pyojeons in the form of particular considerations of description from selection of vocabulary to placement and embellishment of sentences in order to secure national interests and actual profits while accepting the Sinocentric world order and such traditional concepts as beautiful composition, righteousness,and courtesy. The study successfully proved that pyojeons were "important writings of the times" by capturing various significant elements that had been missed out as they were regarded as "sycophant documents" and "uncreative writings." In addition, it also shed light onto the other side of Joseon's diplomacy with Ming and Qing Dynasty as it tried hard to maintain the interests and pride of the nation in the world order dominated by the logic of moral duty and the rules of Sinocentric views instead of accepting sycophancy as a policy.
