Abstract

The ships, cargo, and wooden tablets excavated from the Taean Mado waters are invaluable resources that provide insights into the taxation structure and economic system of the Goryeo Dynasty. This paper focuses on analyzing the characteristics of the cargo recorded in the wooden tablets found in the Mado waters, paying particular attention to terms such as “Jeonchul(田出)”, “Jaegyeong(在京)”, “Jang(長)”, “Hojang(戶長)”, and the titles of the recipients. As highlighted in previous studies, the nature of the cargo recorded in the wooden tablets can be interpreted as either “jeonjo(田租)” or personal cargo(地代, 膳物). In this study, I argue that the nature of the cargo is more aligned with “jeonjo”, akin to military land taxation, rather than simply being land rent. Furthermore, I understand that individuals designated as “Jang” or “Hojang” were responsible for managing farmers who cultivated military land and sent the produce to the military in Gaegyeong. This assumption is supported by the fact that all ships from Mado 1 to 3 were sunk during the military regime, and most recipients were military officials. It suggests an increase in military personnel in the central army or a rise in military land taxation during this period, leading to more frequent shipping operations. The term “Jaegyeong” noted before the recipient's position, is interpreted not merely as “being in Seoul” but rather indicates that the recipients had left their original homes to reside in Gaegyeong for duties or military service. This aligns with accounts in the 󰡔Goryeosa󰡕, which describe local soldiers transitioning to the central military in Gaegyeong or fulfilling military roles while living there. In conclusion, the wooden tablets from the Taean Mado waters provide significant information about the socio-economic dynamics of the Goryeo Dynasty, revealing how military land taxation influenced the transportation of goods and the management of agricultural produce.
