고려시대 명문 기와의 해독과 해석의 의미를 주목한 연구는 1998년 부터 2025년 5월 현재까지 총서류(叢書類) 4편과 논문류 84편이다. 그러나 고려시대의 부족한 문헌자료를 보완할 수 있는 기와 명문의 중요성에도 불구하고 여러 지역에서 출토(수습)된 명문 기와에 대한 분석은 서로 보완되지 못한 채, 발굴유구의 성격을 이해하려는 1차 목적인 기와의 형태와 편년 작업에 집중되어 있다. 그 결과 발굴과정에서 수습된 명문 기와의 판독과 내용의 분석, 그리고 이들 자료의 종합화를 통한 체계적인 연구가 요구됨에도 불구하고 이를 적극적으로 활용하지 못하고 있다. 또한 그에 대한 접근 역시 발굴보고서 이외에는 쉽지 않다. 비록 단편적인 내용을 가진 명문 기와라 할지라도 문헌자료의 한계를 극복한다는 점에서 이를 적극적으로 이용하는 것도 필요해 보인다. 그동안 발굴보고서를 통해 명문 기와의 내용을 정리하는 과정에서 느낀 점은 판독의 오류와 함께 보고서 편집과정에서 오류도 많이 보인다는 것이다. 편집과정에서 명문 기와의 순서가 바뀌거나 내용이 없는 도판 사진으로 되어 있는 경우도 있었다. 또한 보고서상 탁본이나 사진 상태의 불량으로 인해 판독의 어려움이 따랐다. 따라서 판독이 가능한 명문에 대한 적극적 해석이 필요하리라 보여진다. 가장 중요한 것은 명문 기와의 판독 오류를 줄이는 것이다. 그리고 완형에 가까운 명문 기와는 별문제가 없지만, 잔편으로 수습된 명문 기와도 함께 다른 기와와 검토되어야 활용될 수 있을 것이다. 특히 연호명 기와의 경우는 간지명 기와와 함께 짝을 이루는 것이 많을 것으로 생각된다. 향후 판독과정에서 정밀한 주의가 있어야 할 것이다.
Abstract
Research focusing on the meaning of deciphering and interpreting the inscribed roof tiles of the Goryeo Dynasty consists of 4 books and 84 papers from 1998 to May 2025. But Despite the importance of roof tiles that can compensate for the lack of literature in the Goryeo Dynasty, the analysis of roof tiles with letters excavated (recovered) from various regions has not been complemented, and the primary purpose of understanding the nature of excavation remains is to focus on the shape and compilation of roof tiles. Despite the need for systematic research through reading, analyzing the contents, and synthesizing these data, it has not been actively utilized. Access to it is also difficult except for excavation reports. Even if the fragmentary content is called roof tiles with letters engraved on them, it is necessary to actively use it because it overcomes the limitations of literature data. In the meantime, what I have felt in the process of organizing the contents of roof tiles with letters engraved on them through excavation reports is that there are many errors in the report editing process as well as errors in reading. During the editing process, the order of the roof tiles with letters was changed, or there were some cases where the picture was a plate photo with no content. Additionally, it was challenging to read due to the poor state of the rubbed copy or photograph during the report's preparation process. As a result, it appears that an active interpretation of the inscribed characters that can be read is necessary. The most important thing is to reduce the reading error of the roof tiles inscribed with the letters. In addition, there is no problem with roof tiles with letters that are close to a round shape, but roof tiles with letters that have been recovered as the remaining pieces must be reviewed with other roof tiles to be used. In particular, it is thought that many roof tiles are paired with the ticklish roof tiles. Precise attention should be paid to the future reading process.
