Abstract
This study targeted Vietnamese international students enrolled at a university in Busan who voluntarily participated in the research and self-identified their study abroad experience as “successful.” Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), the study explored in depth how these students came to perceive their experience as successful and how they constructed its meaning. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five participants, and the data were analyzed following the six stages of IPA. As a result, six key themes were identified: the meaning of success as an international student, motivations and processes for choosing a university, expectations and realities of interactions with Koreans, learning strategies and learner autonomy, perceptions of the educational environment and suggestions for improvement, and key conditions for successful study abroad. These findings reveal that international students are not passive adaptors but active agents who interpret and reconstruct their learning environment beyond mere adjustment. In particular, Korean language proficiency emerged as a critical factor influencing not only academic achievement but also social relationships and institutional opportunities throughout their study abroad experience. This study contributes to a deeper understanding of international students by providing educational insights grounded in their actual lived experiences.
