Abstract
This study is designed to identify cognitive factors that predict college students’ behavioral intention to follow the safe drinking guidelines suggested by Korean Government. Hypotheses were proposed concerning the proposed predictors of the intention, including perceived severity of and vulnerability to binge drinking, response efficacy of the guidelines and self-efficacy in following the guidelines, positive and negative outcome expectancies associated with the safe drinking. Further, this study explored if the drinkers’ evaluations on the proposed variables and the effects of the predictors on the behavioral intention would vary across the two types of drinkers: low-risk and high-risk drinkers. Based on an online survey of 290 college students who drink alcohol, the hypotheses were tested using hieratical multiple regression analyses and t-tests. The results showed that the intention to follow the guidelines were predicted by perceived response efficacy of the safe drinking guidelines and perceived self-efficacy in engaging in the safe drinking behaviors. However, cognitive evaluations on the predictor and outcome variables varied between row-risk (n = 160) and high-risk drinkers (n = 130). Furthermore, a series of hierarchical multiple regression analyses indicated that perceived severity, response efficacy, self-efficacy, and negative outcome expectancies were significant predictors of the intention to follow the guidelines among low-risk drinkers, whereas response efficacy and self-efficacy were significant predictors among high-risk drinkers. The theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed with particular attention on the tailored message strategies based on target audiences’ drinking styles.
