Abstract
This study analyzed the antecedents of drinking attitudes among college students who believe that drinking is natural and acceptable in college life. It was found that positive emotional effect of drinking and positive social effect of drinking had a positive effect on drinking attitude. Positive social effect was found to have a significant positive effect on injunctive norms and descriptive norms, while positive emotional effect had no significant effect on injunctive norms and descriptive norms. The mediating effects of injunctive and descriptive norms were significant only in the path ‘positive social effects → injunctive norms → drinking attitudes’. Finally, the moderating effect of gender was limited in the causal relationship between positive social effects, social norms, and drinking attitudes. Based on these findings, we propose theoretical contributions at alcohol expectance theory and practical implications for public campaigns.
