Abstract
This study examines the traditional grappling-based physical cultures of Northeast Asia—Korea's Ssireum, Mongolia's Bökh, China's Shuai Jiao, and Japan's Sumo. Focusing on competition arenas, attire, rules, and techniques, the research highlights both differences and similarities. Notably, Sumo emphasizes pushing from the start due to its ring-bound format, while the others initiate with pulling techniques. Korea and China implement weight classes, unlike Mongolia and Japan. These styles, shaped by unique historical and cultural contexts, reveal common structural features that offer valuable insights into regional martial traditions.
