Abstract
This study explores the responses of children labeled with autism to five kinds of stimuli--including visual, auditory and tactile stimuli-- involved in their playing with electronic toys. The participants were three male children labeled with autism in a preschool for children with disabilities. The method was qualitative; over 16 sessions, three people recorded their observations of children labeled with autism responding to the stimuli. The observation notes were analyzed and organized into themes. The results of this study indicate that children labeled with autism behave as positive participants, explorers, requesters and expressers (that is, they expressed themselves very well on which stimuli they liked and wanted) This indicates that children labeled with autism can be active learners in activities when given appropriate stimuli or materials.
