중국 대학 한국어 학습자의 기계번역 사용 과정 연구

본 연구는 중국 대학의 한국어 학습자들이 기계번역을 어떻게 사용하는지, 그 과정에서 일어나는 인지적인 활동을 분석하는 데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 한국어 학과 학습자들을 대상으로 기계번역을 사용하여 중국어를 한국어로 번역하는 과제를 수행하게 하고, 학습자가 발화한 사고구술 자료와 번역 결과물을 분석하였다. 분석 결과, 학습자들은 주로 파파고와 유다오를 사용하고 문장 혹은 문단 단위로 번역을 진행하였으며, 번역 과정에서 입력 언어 수정하기, 원문 문장 나누기, 어휘 재탐색하기, 문장 성분 확인하기, 번역 결과물 비교하기 등 다양한 전략을 사용하였다. 번역 결과물에 대한 수정은 형태 정확성, 의미 명확성, 의미 유창성을 확보하기 위한 것으로 주로 어휘 차원에서 이루어졌다. 문장 차원에서의 수정은 미미한 정도에 그쳤는데, 특히 복문의 경우 문제점을 찾지 못하거나 찾더라도 수정에 실패하는 경우가 많았다. 본 연구는 중국 대학 한국어 학습자들이 기계번역을 사용하는 과정을 살핀 것으로, 향후 기계번역에 기반한 한국어 교육 연구에 기초자료로 활용할 수 있을 것이다.
Abstract
The objective of this study is to determine how Korean language learners at Chinese universities use machine translation and to analyze the cognitive activities that take place in the process. To this end, learners in the Korean language department performed tasks of translating Chinese into Korean using machine translation, and think-aloud data spoken by learners and the translation results were analyzed. As a result, learners mainly used Papago and Youdao; translated into the units of sentences or paragraphs; used various strategies in the translation process, including modifying input language, dividing original sentences, re-searching vocabulary, confirming sentence constituents, and comparing translation results. Corrections of the translation results were made mainly at the vocabulary level to secure form accuracy, semantic clarity, and semantic fluency. The correction of sentences was insignificant, and especially in the case of complex sentences, there were many cases where errors were not detected or corrections failed even if they were detected. This study has examined the process of using machine translation by Korean language learners at Chinese universities, which can be used as basic data for Korean language education research based on machine translation in the future.
