Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the aspects of language use observed in social media communication from the perspective of translanguaging. Translanguaging refers to fluid and dynamic language practices that cross the boundaries of various languages and sign systems. As a result of examining communication scenes on various SNS platforms, parallel and mixed use of two or more languages, non-standard language use, and the use of various modes such as hashtags, emoticons, and images were observed. Such translanguaging is based on criticality of existing communication practices and creativity for new communication practices, and it was confirmed that it is realized in the context of a community of practice. A community of practice here is a group that shares linguistic and discursive repertoires while engaging in playful activities through new communication practices by interacting with each other in solidarity. This study also presented cases of playful subversion that challenge existing practices and ideologies through translanguaging. This shows today's linguistic reality that utilizes diverse linguistic resources, moving away from the ideology of a purely monolingual language and the ideology of lingua bias in communication.
