초록
This study explores the discourse strategy of code-switching between English and Korean on Facebook, which is the world’s largest online social networking service. This paper first briefly discusses the concept of code-switching with reference to other related terms, code-mixing, borrowing, and diglossia. Then based on the Facebook and the user groups of the Korean undergraduate and graduate students associations in the US, this paper investigates 12 types and functions of code-switching between English and Korean such as quotation, addressee specification, interjection, repetition, message qualification, affective expression, solidarity buildup, conflict control, and face-threatening acts mitigation. This study confirms that code-switching on Facebook is a discourse strategy to achieve various interactional goals among Korean undergraduate and graduate students in the U.S.
