Abstract

In a rapidly changing market environment, companies are constantly trying to secure technological capabilities to sustain growth and survival, but it is practically difficult for individual companies to possess all the latest technologies in various fields required for innovations. Therefore, this study aims to analyze how the characteristics and appropriability of technological collaboration partners affect product innovation performance in the process of corporate R&D collaboration. In addition, the interaction effect of technological collaboration and appropriability (mediating effect of appropriability) is analyzed. The subject of technological collaboration, which is an independent variable, is classified into scientific system, intermediary system, and market system, according to characteristics through the review of prior studies. This study shows that the scientific system, the intermediary system, and the market system, which are independent variables categorizing the subject of technological collaboration, have a positive effect on product innovation. In addition, appropriability itself has a positive effect on product innovation. This study categorizes and classifies various sources of innovations according to the characteristics of technological collaboration partners and provides implications for effective technological collaboration. In addition, we confirm the effect of appropriability on product innovation and also the mediating role of appropriability on the innovation performance. The findings of this study suggest that the creation of innovation performance through technological collaboration and the strengthening of the strategic appropriability regime can lead to more stable innovation performance by diminishing the uncertainty in profit generation.
