《A Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language(漢英韻府)》(1874)는 미국인 선교사이자 공사관의 비서였던 사무엘 윌리엄스(Samuel Wells Williams)가 편찬한 중영사전으로, 모리슨의 뒤를 이어 북방 관화를 포함하여 다양한 방언을 나열한, 이전에 발행했던 다양한 사전에 대한 집대성이라 할 수 있다. 《漢英韻府》는 《五方元音》의 체제를 따라 베이징(北京), 광둥(廣東), 샤먼(厦門), 상하이(上海) 등 네 지역의 발음을 필두로 샨터우(汕頭), 옌타이(煙臺)의 발음도 병기한 광범위한 발음 사전으로, 1874년 초판본에서는 사무엘 윌리엄스가 만든 표기 체계(The Williams System)로 쓰여졌으나, 그의 사후 출판된 1909년 개정판에서는 당시 널리 쓰인 웨이드식 표기 체계(Wade’s System)에 의해 전체 글자에 대한 표기가 수정되었다. 또한 개정판에서는 표기법의 변화뿐만 아니라, 20세기 초 성모, 운모, 성조의 변화도 일부 적용하여 반영한 예들을 발견할 수 있다. 본 연구는 1874년에 초판으로 발행된 《漢英韻府》의 서문과 1909년 출판된 개정판의 서문 비교 분석을 중심으로 《漢英韻府》의 편찬 배경과 학술적 가치, 음운 체계와 특징 등에 대해 고찰하고, 마지막에 《漢英韻府》 서문의 국문 번역본을 부록으로 첨부하였다.
Abstract
A Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language(1874) is a Chinese-English dictionary compiled by Samuel Williams, an American missionary and secretary of the legation. It can be said to be a compilation of according to the system of the Wu-Fang Yuen Yin, A Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language is the pronunciation of four regions: Beijing, Guangdong, Xiamen, Shanghai, and Shantou. It is an extensive pronunciation dictionary that also includes pronunciations of Shan and Yantai. In the first edition of 1874, it was written in the writing system created by Samuel Williams (The Williams System). The notation for all letters has been corrected by Wade's System. Also, in the revised version, not only changes in the notation, but also some changes in virgin and mica in the early 20th century can be found by applying some examples. This study focuses on comparative and analysis of the preface of A Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language first published in 1874 and the preface of the revised edition published in 1909, and the compilation background and academic value, the phonological system and characteristics of A Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language. And a Korean translation of the preface of A Syllabic Dictionary of the Chinese Language is attached as an appendix.
