연구 목적: 이 연구는 Robert Morrison이 편찬한 A Dictionary of the Chinese Language의 연구 가치와 중요성을 제고하고, 근대 이중언어 자료의 발굴과 연구 필요성을 알리는 데 있다. 연구 방법: 전통적 문헌 분석의 방식을 따라 위 사전의 음운체계, 어휘수록 방식과 내용 구성 특징을 면밀히 살펴보고, 동시에 선행연구와 당시 문헌들의 기록을 함께 비교, 고찰하였다. 연구 내용: Morrison은 위 사전에서 현실 남경음(南京音)을 체계적으로 반영하고, 어휘에 관한 다양한 용례와 설명을 구체적으로 제시하였다. 또한, 선교 목적을 넘어 영중(英中) 간의 상호 이해를 중시하고, 독자 중심의 실용성과 대중성을 추구하였다. 결론 및 제언: 위 사전은 근대 동서 해역교류의 매개체이자 문화 상대주의적 시각에서 서로를 이해하고 상호 협력적인 관계를 이어나갈 수 있도록 하였다는 데 중요한 의의가 있다.
Abstract
The purpose of this study is to promote the research value and importance of A Dictionary of the Chinese Language compiled by Morrison. First, this paper closely examined the phonological system, method of vocabulary presentation and content composition characteristics of the dictionary according to the traditional literature analysis method. In addition, previous studies and records of the literature at the time were compared and reviewed together. Morrison systematically reflected the actual sound system of Nanjing in the above dictionary and presented various examples and explanations for vocabulary in detail. Moreover, it emphasized mutual understanding between the West and China beyond the purpose of missionary work, and pursued practicality and popularity for readers. The above dictionary is of great significance in that it allows mutual cooperative relationships to continue from a cultural relativistic perspective as a medium of modern exchange between the East and West.
