Abstract
This paper aims to examine the characteristics and trends on the Chinese names of 19 century Christian missionaries who worked in China with Chinese names in relation to their real names. For this aim, 239 people with Chinese names from the 339 people covered by A. Wiley(1867) were selected as the subjects. Through the Chinese names of missionaries in China before the 19th century, we can see that these names were used earlier. The Chinese names of Christian missionaries to China in the 19th century were largely dived into monosyllables and multisyllables of Chinese character, and the multisyllables were divided into surnames and surnames combined with given names, and examples were provided and analyzed. By way of this, most of these names were made to match or be similar to Chinese native names, but in rare cases, they were made to have four or more Chinese characters to reveal that they were foreigners. The characteristics of these names were seen as an effort to promote exchanges with the Chinese, a mean for effective Christian missionary work, and to demonstrate that the Christian missionary himself was familiar with the Chinese language and characters.
