Abstract

This paper examines the evolving representation of the Wushan Goddess image in Tang poetry, analyzing its formation, utilization, and artistic significance. Rooted in early Chinese mythological texts like Shanhaijing and Chuci, the Wushan Goddess initially symbolized transcendence and divine beauty. By the Tang dynasty, the figure of the goddess emerged as a multi-dimensional symbol, reflecting the emotional and artistic landscapes of poets. The analysis is structured into four sections. First, it traces the historical formation of the Wushan Goddess image, focusing on its development from mythological origins to literary symbolization. In particular, works like Song Yu’s Gaotang Fu played a pivotal role in establishing her as a poetic figure representing ethereal beauty and unfulfilled longing. Second, the study explores the utilization of the goddess image across Tang poetry. By analyzing vocabulary patterns and poetic devices, this research identifies key poetic clusters that emphasize emotional motifs such as separation, longing, and natural transcendence. Terms like “clouds” and “rain” frequently accompany her image, highlighting her connection to the fluidity of human emotions and nature. Third, the Wushan Goddess image is shown to manifest in varied symbolic roles: as an idealized beauty, a source of ephemeral desire, and a representation of loyalty and unfulfilled aspiration. The goddess simultaneously evokes personal longing and critiques societal values, adding complexity to her portrayal in poems by Li Bai, Du Fu, and other Tang poets. Finally, the paper discusses the artistic utilization of this imagery, particularly its role in blending natural scenery and emotional expression. The Wushan Goddess image serves as a bridge between the real and imagined worlds, elevating Tang poetry’s aesthetic and emotional depth. By illuminating the rich symbolism of the Wushan Goddess in Tang poetry, this study underscores her importance as a literary device that conveys personal, emotional, and cultural values. Future research may explore similar mythological figures to further unravel the dynamic interplay of symbolism, history, and artistry in Chinese classical poetry.
