Abstract

This study examines the development of Hanju(寒洲) Yi Jinsang(李震相, 1818~1886) philosophy of yixue(易學) and his discourse on the heart-mind(xin, 心), focusing on his interpretation of the Hetu(河圖). In particular, Lee Jinsang sought to trace the origins of the heart-mind by exploring the method of the heart-mind(xinfa, 心法) of the ancient sage Fuxi(伏羲) as it is revealed in the Hetu. Based on the statement in the Zhouyi(周易), “The yi(易) has the taiji(太極),” and Shao Yong’s(邵雍, 1011–1077) assertion, “The heart-mind becomes the taiji(心爲太極),” Yi Jinsang argued that the study of taiji is inseparable from yixue, and that taiji could serve as a theme for exploring the essence of the heart-mind. With this critical perspective, he focused on the Hetu, particularly interpreting the central positions of 5 and 10 within the Hetu as taiji. This paper examines an aspect of Yi Jinsang’s thought on the heart-mind by analyzing his understanding of taiji based on the Hetu. Furthermore, Yi Jinsang’s discourse on the Hetu ultimately extended to a broader understanding of the principles of change and cyclicality in the natural world, as well as insights into the order of human society and the essence of moral ethics, including everyday ethical practices. Through this exploration, the study highlights how Yi Jinsang’s interpretation of the Hetu evolved from an inquiry into taiji to a more comprehensive understanding of social order and ethics. This research is significant in that it offers an opportunity to examine Yi Jinsang’s yixue theory—an area that has not been extensively studied—within the context of the history of Korean yixue.
