Abstract

This paper analyzes the development and content of the philosophical thought of Myeonwoo (俛宇) Gwak Jong-seok (郭鍾錫, 1846–1919) of the Hanju School (寒洲學派), focusing on his theories of the xin (心說) and his study of the yixue (易學). Gwak Jong-seok inherited the “Mind is Principle” (心卽理) theory from his teacher, Lee Jin-sang (李震相), and applied concepts from the Zhouyi to explore the fundamental nature of the xin (心). This study examines how Gwak explained the organic relationships between ti (體) and yong (用), movement (動) and stillness (靜) based on the Hetu (河圖), and how these ideas are linked to his theories on the mind (心論). Furthermore, this paper highlights Gwak Jong-seok’s understanding of Pre-Heaven (先天) and Post-Heaven (後天) and examines how the essence of the mind is positioned within his system of the Zhouyi. He meticulously argued that the Pre-Heaven and Post-Heaven diagrams are closely interconnected while emphasizing the fundamental significance of Pre-Heaven’s ti (體). Through this analysis, the paper demonstrates that Gwak considered the xin (心) as the essence of humanity, placing great importance on its relationship with li (理) and the tiji (太極) based on the structure of ti (體) and yong (用). By analyzing Gwak Jong-seok’s theories on the mind and his philosophical thought based on the Zhouyi, this paper explores how the Zhouyi and its theories, as an open text with multiple interpretative possibilities, provided a framework for traditional philosophers to develop their own original thoughts. Gwak’s Zhouyi philosophy was not confined to theoretical discussions but was also closely linked to practical responses to social issues of his time. His theory of the xin, which emphasized the mind as the essential foundation for addressing social problems while maintaining flexibility in responding to real-world challenges, also played a role in his social activism during the late Joseon Dynasty and the Japanese colonial period.
