Abstract

This paper addresses whether Lee Gwang-sa, a disciple of Jeong Je-du, accepted the doctrine of the extension of innate knowledge. Two differing viewpoints exist on this issue. This study aims to analyze Lee Gwang-sa and Lee Gwang-chan’s ‘Great Learning’ debates, examine Lee Gwang-sa’s view of the ‘Great Learning’, and present my own perspective on this topic. The core of Lee Gwang-sa’s Practical Learning lies in “exclusively focusing inward and being sincere to oneself[專於內, 實於己].” “Exclusively focusing inward” means recognizing that the “highest good(至善)” resides within and solely seeking it from one’s inner self. “Being sincere to oneself[實於己]” means actualizing the highest good within oneself. Lee Gwang-sa regards the “Ancient Text of the Great Learning” as the authentic version. He interprets “investigating things(格物)” as “rectifying[正] the ‘things(物)’” in the phrase “things have roots and branches(物有本末),” and “extending knowledge(致知)” as “exhausting the ‘knowledge(知)’” in the phrase “knowing what comes first and what comes last(知所先後).” He separates “investigating things and extending knowledge ” from the eight items and identifies it as the ultimate goal of the “Great Learning. These insights differ from those of both Zhu Xi’s and Yangming’s philosophies. Lee Gwang-chan interprets Lee Gwang-sa’s theory of investigation of things as ‘correcting the inverted order of self-cultivation [fundamental] and governing others [peripheral],’ and his theory of extension of knowledge as ‘understanding that self-cultivation should precede governing others.’ Lee Gwang-chan criticizes Lee Gwang-sa’s theory of investigating things and extending knowledge for lacking study on knowledge, which is the basis of practice, and for being unrelated to the effort of eliminating utilitarianism and personal desires. This criticism can be sufficiently raised from the perspective of Zhu Xi’s philosophy. However, there is a possibility that Lee Gwang-sa’s theory of investigating things and extending knowledge can be interpreted differently. Lee Gwang-sa’s theory of investigation of things and extension of knowledge can be reinterpreted based on his practical learning foundation of ‘exclusively focusing inward and being sincere to onesel’ which he learned through Jeong Je-du. The knowledge of ‘knowing what comes first and what comes last(知所先後)’ refers to knowing that ‘knowing where to stop(知止)’ comes first and ‘being able to attain(能得)’ comes last in the six matters(六事) ranging from ‘knowing where to stop’ to ‘being able to attain’. This refers to the awakening of perfectly good innate knowledge as the starting point of learning, and making this perfect goodness reside within oneself through the practice of innate knowledge as the main teaching of the Great Learning. And investigation of things is a practical activity of going forth to the six ‘things(物)’ of ‘intentions(意), mind(心), body(身), family(家), state(國), and all under heaven(天下)’ and correcting their improprieties. Only by interpreting Lee Gwang-sa’s theory of investigation of things and extension of knowledge in this way does his adoption of ‘investigation of things and extension of knowledge’ as the ultimate aim of the ‘Great Learning become persuasive. This interpretive framework differs from Wang Shouren’s theory of ‘investigation of things and extension of knowledge’ but maintains its uniqueness in that it does not deny the theory of extension of innate knowledge.
