Abstract

This study examines the Four Beginnings(四端) and the Seven Emotions(七情) through the theoretical framework of Li-Qi Interaction(理氣互發), as formulated by the Joseon Neo-Confucian scholar Yi Hwang. Yi Hwang diverged from Zhu Xi’s orthodox interpretation by emphasizing the active and dynamic nature of Li. Yi Hwang advocated the theory of Li-Qi Interaction based on the activity and dynamism of Li. The theory of Li-Qi Interaction posits a mechanism in which Li and Qi are simultaneously activated and interact, providing a framework for explaining the process through which moral emotions emerge within the human mind and body. He classified emotions as Li-initiated(理發) Four Beginnings, which are purely good, and Qi-initiated(氣發) Seven Emotions, which are morally indeterminate. However, his suggestion that the ‘goodness of moderated emotions’ within the Seven Emotions parallels that of the Four Beginnings has caused ambiguity and confusion in educational contexts. While most textbooks clearly distinguish between the two, some EBS CSAT materials blur the distinction, making accurate understanding more difficult. This underscores the need for a clearer grasp of Yi Hwang’s Li-Qi Interaction mechanism. Yi Hwang’s theory is not purely ontological but a practical model of self-cultivation and ethics, structured as follows: (1) both Li, with moral superiority, and Qi, with temperamental limits, are active; (2) Li and Qi are always activated together; (3) morality(Li) and desire(Qi) form the two essential components of the mind-body; and (4) transforming one’s temperament is key to moral practice. Viewed through this mechanism, the Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions originate from different sources, making their forms of goodness fundamentally distinct. When temperament is pure and Li takes the lead, the goodness of the Four Beginnings manifests, and the regulated Seven Emotions appear unified with it. Such a refined understanding helps resolve misconceptions about Yi Hwang’s ethical thought and enhances the clarity and accuracy of moral education in high school curricula.
