Abstract

War is not merely an event associated with military or physical violence; it can also be understood as a fundamental source of memory that shapes the identities of nations, groups, and individuals. War reproduces memory, and this memory, in turn, forms identity. For this reason, war should not be regarded as an “event of the past,” but rather as a political resource for the construction of future identities. This article examines the works of an Italian-Ethiopian writer and an Ethiopian-American writer, set against the historical context of the Italo-Ethiopian War of 1935–36 and the subsequent period of Italian occupation. Both authors engage with the traumatic past through the theme of “female representation,” using it as a lens to explore the manifestations of wartime violence; however, they adopt different narrative strategies and approaches. This divergence also symbolizes the expansion of Ethiopian diaspora literature. Because memories lacking testimony and documentation can give rise to collective amnesia, they come to shape not only the relationship between past and present but also relations projected into the future. Accordingly, the different ways in which each author processes memory are linked to various possibilities for reconciliation and healing between states and peoples
