초록
Today transnational migrations and movements due to the globalization have expanded the meaning of ‘diaspora’. Diaspora is now defined as the spatial dispersion of a people from their original homeland. The term can also refer to the people dispersed. Multi-cultural and multi-ethnic societies are a fact of life in many countries and this global trend seems inevitable. In this connection,a disaspora and its modes of life can pose significant problems. Melania Mazzucco’s novel 『Vita』 brings to life the Italian immigrant experience. Mazzucco reveals the story of Vita and Diamante, two cousins who immigrate to New York City in 1903, whose lives in a diaspora are shown contrastively. The present study aims to examine how the diaspora people, as ‘the other’ and as ‘a minority’, live their life at the boundaries of a new community. Especially the lives of women are focussed on, because of their more horrible conditions. For all that, the female protagonist Vita, with her affirmative and active attitude, succeeds in finding her identity and in entering the new community. This study tries to contribute to understanding the history of Italian immigration in the early 20th century and to provide a new perspective on the lives of immigrants in a modern muticultural society.
