Abstract
This study examines the political and cultural influence of Cristina Trivulzio di Belgiojoso (1808–1871) by analyzing her salon activities in Paris and Milan during the Italian Risorgimento. Challenging male-centered narratives that marginalize women’s contributions, it argues that Belgiojoso transformed the salon—a conventionally private, feminine space—into a political arena where ideas circulated, networks formed, and visions of Italian nationhood were articulated. Her Paris salon functioned as a transnational hub linking Italian unification to European liberal debates, while her return to Milan in 1848 marked a shift toward direct political engagement through the organization of medical relief, volunteers, and logistical support for revolutionary forces. By interpreting her salon work, caregiving, and organizational practices as forms of unofficial female politics, this study repositions Belgiojoso as a central figure in the Risorgimento and reframes Italian unification as a social and cultural process shaped by women’s political labor.
